Safety at Sea

Santa Barbara Yacht Club is pleased to offer the hands on training portion of the US Sailing Safety at Sea Seminar.

  • What: US Sailing Safety at Sea Seminar - Day 2: HANDS ON TRAINING 

  • When: Saturday, February 23, 2019 8:00am-5:00pm 

  • Where: Santa Barbara Yacht Club (130 Harbor Way, Santa Barbara, CA 93109) 

  • How much: Entry fee is $200 per registrant and includes breakfast and lunch. Discounts are offered to SBYC members and US Sailing members and will be given at checkout.  There is a $25 cancellation fee and no refunds will be issued after February 16, 2019.  Register Online here: https://sbyc.formstack.com/forms/2019_safety_at_sea

  • Who: To be eligible to take this seminar, participants must have completed the Day 1 classroom portion or online training module of the Safety at Sea Program (available at: http://www.boaterexam.com/sailing/safetyatsea/). Participants may sign up for this hands on training course now and need only complete the online module or Day 1 classroom portion within 365 days prior to February 23, 2019.  Attendees will be expected to get in the water with their foul weather gear, boots, and life jacket.


The Hands On Training, US Sailing-sanctioned 8-hour seminar contains a host of useful information intended to orient you and your crew toward a safer voyage. Even where you "already know that," many participants find that organizing the information in a consistent fashion and with a common vocabulary helps the crew as a whole manage a safer and more efficient journey.

0800 – 0830: Registration
0830 – 0900:  Introduction (Training Staff includes:  Chuck Hawley + 2 more)
0900-1000:  Emergency Signaling & Fire Prevention
1000-1200:   MOB using Life Sling Rescue & Storm Sails rigging and flying @ SBYC End tie
1200-1245:  Lunch
1245-1315:  Scenarios 
1315-1400:  PFD Re-arm & Damage Control Kit Care/Maintenance
1400-1430:  Walk to pool, change into clothes for next section
1430-1600:  PFD - Cold Water Survivial Techniques / Life Raft - Board & Righting
1600-1630:  Exam

Parking:

There are public parking lots located all around the Santa Barbara Harbor with an all day parking fee of $10.  There is also free parking available at Pershing Park and Bath Street, as shown on: Attachment H - _SB Harbor Map_.pdf
