2007 OPENING DAY
Sailing Instructions
1. RULES
This race will be
governed by the 2005-2008 Racing Rules of Sailing, the prescriptions of US
Sailing, the applicable class rules, the NOR, and by these sailing instructions
(except as each modifies the former). The
race is designated Category A. The Marine Industry Representative rule (MIR) of
PHRF will not apply.
2. ENTRY AND ELIGIBILITY
2.1 Eligible boats may register with the Santa
Barbara Yacht Club no later than 1230 hours on the day of the race. Race entry forms are available in the back
hallway of the clubhouse. Entries will
also be taken via the racing page of the SBYC website (http://www.sbyc.org/Racing.html)
for boats having completed a web entry authorization form.
2.2 Eligible competitors shall have valid PHRF
Certificates, or in the case of J-24’s, Melges 24’s, and J-105’s, shall have
applicable fleet membership, sail in class legal configurations, and be
equipped for Category IV Races. Valid
PHRF rating certificates or proof of application for a certificate for PHRF
boats must be on file with the Race Committee no later than the entry deadline
for the race.
2.3 Eligible competitors for CHRF shall notify
the CHRF Race Committee of intention to race by 1230 hours the day of the race.
3. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS
Notices to
competitors will be posted on the official notice board located on the SBYC
lower deck.
4. CHANGES IN SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
Any change in the
sailing instructions will be posted before 1230 hours on the day of the race.
5. SIGNALS
Signals will be
displayed from the SBYC yardarm.
6. SCHEDULE OF RACES
6.1 One race will be held for each fleet. There will be one start for all PHRF boats,
separate starts for one design fleets, and a separate mass start for the CHRF
fleet.
6.2 The first warning signal for the first start
will be at 1355 hours.
7. CLASS DESIGNATIONS
Class flags will be
as follows:
PHRF Red flag with a
white “A”
J/105 Black flag with a white “S”
J/24 Brown
flag with a white “J”
CHRF Yellow flag with a black “H”
8. RACING AREA
The racing area will
be off the Santa Barbara Yacht Club. The
starting line will be approximately 0.25 n. miles west southwest of the
entrance to
9. THE COURSE
9.1 Courses will be taken from the 2007 SBYC
Course Chart. The course for each class will
be posted from the SBYC Deck with the Warning signal for each class.
10. MARKS
10.1 Marks will be white permanent markers but may
be replaced by inflatable tetrahedrons.
11. THE START
Races will be
started in accordance with racing rule 26. The times are approximate Flags will signal the exact start sequence.

11.2 The start will be between
11.3 Start times may be changed on the day of the
race to consolidate fleets with insufficient entries.
11.4 Boats whose preparatory signal has not been
made shall keep clear of the starting area and of all boats whose preparatory
signal has been made.
11.5 Note that the CHRF Fleet will have a mass
start after the J-24 start (not a staggered start).

14.1 Protests shall be written on US Sailing
standard forms available in the SBYC main hallway, and must be delivered to the
Race Committee within one hour of the last boats finish time.
14.2 Protests involving an infringement of a rule
of Part 2 of the Racing Rules will be subject to non-binding arbitration in
accordance with SBYC Protest Arbitration Guidelines.
14.3 The arbitration committee will hear protests
in the approximate order of receipt as soon as practical.
15. SCORING
The Appendix A low-point
scoring system will apply. One race
shall constitute the series. There is no
throw out.

17. RADIO COMMUNICATION
The Race committee
will be monitoring VHF Channel 71.
18. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY
Participants in this
event compete entirely at their own risk. See Rule 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority will not accept any
liability for material damage or personal injury sustained in conjunction with
or prior to, during, or after the regatta.
