
SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
2007 SCYA MIDWINTERS
HOSTED BY SANTA BARBARA YACHT CLUB
FEBRUARY 17-18, 2007
1. RULES
1.1 The regatta will be governed by the ‘rules’ as defined in the 2005-2008 Racing Rules of Sailing, the prescriptions of US Sailing, the rules of the relevant classes, and the Notice of Race, except as modified by these Sailing Instructions.
1.2 All competitors shall be members in good standing with their respective class.
2. NOTICE TO COMPETITORS
Notices to competitors will be posted on the official regatta board located on the lower deck of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club.
3. CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
3.1 Any change to the sailing instructions made ashore will be posted at the regatta board before 1030 hours on Saturday, and before 1000 on Sunday, except that any change in the schedule of races will be posted by 1800 hours on the day before it will take effect.
3.2 Any change to the sailing instructions made on the water will be hailed to each
competing yacht when the Race Committee is displaying code flag ‘Lima’ (yellow and black squares).
4. SCHEDULE OF RACES

Registration closes: 1000 hours
Competitors’ Meeting: 1030 hours on SBYC deck
First Warning signal: 1155 hours
Subsequent races to follow
Four races are scheduled
Sunday, February 18, 2007
First Warning signal: 1155 hours
Subsequent races to follow.
Three races are scheduled
No warning signal will be given after 1530 hours.
Awards ceremony at Yacht Club: ASAP following racing
5. RACING AREA
Saturday and Sunday: the racing area will be outside Santa Barbara Harbor approximately 0.75 nm southwest of the harbor entrance.
6. THE COURSE
6.1 The courses are as displayed on Addendum ‘MIDWINTERS COURSE CHART’.
6.2 The course will be designated by white numbers displayed red placards.
7. MARKS
Marks will be five foot inflatable tetrahedrons. Colors are shown on the course chart.
8. CLASS FLAGS
Class Flags shall be as follows:
J-105’s—Black flag with white ‘S’
J-24’s—Brown flag with white ‘J’
Melges 24’s—Red flag with a white ‘A’
9. THE START
9.1 Races will be started using RRS 26 with the warning given 5 minutes before the
starting signal. The warning signal for one class may be the start for the preceding class.
9.2 The starting line will be between a staff displaying an orange flag on the race committee boat and an orange tetrahedron.
9.3 A boat starting more than four minutes after its starting signal will be scored Did Not Start. This changes rule A4.1.
9.4 Boats not starting or finishing shall stay clear of the start/finish line.
10. CHANGE OF POSITION OF THE NEXT MARK
To change the position of the next mark, the race committee will move the original mark (or finishing line) to a new position. The change will be signaled before the leading boat has begun the leg by displaying code flag ‘C’ with several sound signals. Subsequent marks may be relocated without further signaling to maintain the course configuration.
11. THE FINISH
The finishing line will be between a staff displaying an orange flag on the race committee boat and an orange tetrahedron at the other end.
12. PROTESTS AND REQUESTS FOR REDRESS
12.1 Protest forms are available from the main hallway of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club. Protests shall be delivered to the race committee within 60 minutes after the race committee boat returns to the dock. The same protest time limit applies to all protests by the race committee and to requests for redress.
13. SCORING
13.1 The low point scoring system of Appendix A will apply, except that all races will be used to score the series. No throwouts will be taken. (This modifies A2)
13.2 Two races are required to constitute a series.
14. PRIZES
Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each class.
15. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY
Competitors participate in this regatta entirely at their own risk. See Rule 4, Decision to Race. The host club will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with, prior to, during or after the regatta.
